Country Folks Horse & Farm Expo Welcomes Back Mitzi Summers
(reprinted from Country Folks)
Summers to demonstrate Jumping, Long-Lining and Lunging at the Fonda Fairgrounds, Fonda NY Oct 4-5 (2008)
Mitzi Summers had devoted her life to helping horses with their people. She attended a Horsemaster school in England when she was still in her teens, and then worked with horses in a large jumper-barn in Michigan. There she taught some of the young horseman and women who later made it to the Olympics.
Mitzi also apprenticed with the "Father of American Dressage", Chuck Grant. It was at his farm that she rode and trained horses up to Grand Prix level and also became more involved in Combined Training and Jumping.
Before going to England, Mitzi rode almost exclusively Western, and her love of good Western Riding continues.
Mitzi is one of about 17 Level IV Centered Riding Instructors in the world, and is also a clinician with the Certified Horsemanship Association. She has tested and certified over 200 instructors for this organization.
Mitzi also enjoys judging, and has judged all types of horse breed shows for many years. She attended the American Judging Association's Judge Certification Program at the University of North Carolina with Don Burt, and finished in the top third in all three catagories: Western, Hunt Seat, and Saddle Seat.
For the last several years Mitzi has been teaching and training in Europe. She has also taught in New Zealand. Her "specialty" is working with both the horse and rider, integrating her own theories. Centered Riding, TTouch, and the positive aspects of Natural Horsemanship are also used to help the horse and rider understand each other and relate on a basis of partnership -- not domination. Mitzi's techniques have been highly successful in non-abusive behavior modification techniques for the nervous or aggressive horse.
Mitzi also demonstrated at the Horse Expo in Belgiam, the Alabama Horse Expo, as well as assisting Sall.y Swift, Richard Shrake, and Susan Harris at the expos in Ohio, Massachusetts and Rochester NY.
